Sunglasses After Dark & Strange Victory Presents: Legendary Shack Shakers
Quite content on being bad influences and the boys your mama warned you about, Sunglasses After Dark, our wildest rock’n’roll club night in Belfast is back to paint the walls of Voodoo, Belfast blood red on Friday the 13th of November 2015.
In association with Strange Victory, one of the biggest roots rock and roll bands on the planet, the one and only Legendary Shack Shakers are bringing their harp driven, wild, southern punk blues and rockabilly to Belfast for the first time. Yes.
Us over at Folk and Tumble are a little bit excited for this one… After a near five year hiatus, Legendary Shack Shakers are back with a vengeance with a new album and with their infamous hell-for-leather roadshow which has earned quite a name for itself with its unique brand of Southern Gothic that is all-at-once irreverent, revisionist, dangerous, and fun. Along with their charismatic, rail-thin frontman and blues-harpist J.D. Wilkes, the Shack Shakers are a four-man wrecking crew from the South whose explosive interpretations of the blues, punk, rock and country have made fans, critics and legions of potential converts into true believers.
Regardless of group’s time off, their reputation for intensity has stuck with them throughout. On stage, JD has been compared to the likes of Iggy Pop, David Byrne, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The Nashville Scene named Wilkes “the best frontman in Nashville” in 2002, while former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra has called JD “the last great rock and roll frontman.” Not bad,eh?
With their new album, ‘The Southern Surreal’ having dropped in September on Alternative Tentacles Records – Jello Biafra’s record label – this little beauty’s release coincided with the band’s 20th anniversary.
And of course as it’s hosted by Sunglasses After Dark, you lucky lot can expect DJs spinning the rarest, greasiest and wildest records from the roots of rock‘n’roll that promises no familiarity with your granny’s version of the 50s, leaving you a shell of your former self in a perfectly destroyed husk, begging for mercy and screaming for more. Let’s do it.
