Saturday night saw Electric Zoo Studios, Eastbourne play host to a small celebration of the completion of the new Duke Special album. This was only natural considering this is where the album was born.
It was a rather cosy affair as fans and friends of Duke Special gathered around to hear an exclusive preview of his much awaited upcoming album, ‘Look Out Machines!’ as part of his Pledge Music Campaign. As we arrived we were greeted by a selection of wines and finger foods. At one point even the man himself played the role of waiter ensuring everyone had their fair share of vegetarian sausage rolls.
The album was played without any explanation or titles given. No big presentation or fuss. Simply fans of great music nodding their heads from their seats and showing their appreciation for the hard work that had evidently gone into making this album.
It would be a shame not to mention the education on the wonderful world of wax cylinders we were treated to from Greg Butler of the Shellac Collective. Hearing ‘Song 2’ by Blur and ‘Firestarter’ by The Prodigy on wax cylinders was quite an unexpected moment and one that I shall always remember every time I hear the original versions!
Of course, I’m not going to give too much away about the album as the anticipation is part of the fun as a music fan. What I will say is prepare your ears for a big production and move your mind away from the sound that you are traditionally used to hearing from Duke Special. Rest assured though, he has managed to hold on to the heartfelt, poetic lyrics we are accustomed too. Sure, it wouldn’t be a Duke album if it wasn’t different to the last!
‘Look Out Machines!’ will be released in early 2015 with the first single from the album, ‘Elephant Graveyard’ released on 21st November 2014.
