After nine years cutting her teeth in the West Coast and Nashville, Madrid born singer-songwriter Juana Everett will release her sophomore album titled 'Past Lives in California' in early 2026.
The first single ‘One Million Dollars’ is a powerful track that narrates the desperation of a woman who wants to take revenge for all the pain the world has caused her. It’s a proclamation of madness coming from an imaginary past life in the American West. A story that the artist makes her own, absorbing every aspect of this personality that lives in her psyche.
Everett creates a whole film and stereo hi-fi noir landscape to share this tale that could be labelled as Dark Country and Alternative Americana, leaning on modern reverbs and pedal steel arrangements with a southwestern flavour, and creating a sense of mystery, sensuality, and danger.
The lyrics leave no room for double interpretations, as she confesses:
I don’t wanna hear you talk me to no reason, nothing’s gonna change my mind. And if they ever find me and then I go to prison, I must have something to learn.
Everett’s alter ego does not apologize for her criminal aspirations, and boldly expresses her darkest fantasies and dangerous intentions.
‘One Million Dollars’ has been recorded live at Middletree Studios in Nashville. The band, formed by Juana Everett herself, Alex Muñoz (Margo Price, Nikki Lane, John Hiatt, Jeremy Ivey), Joe Pisapia (Allison Russell, KD Lang, Kacey Musgraves, Jonathan Wilson) and Jamie Dick (Rhiannon Giddens, Dawn Landes, Gill Landry), bounces off of each other’s interpretation, letting themselves be taken by the energy of the song filling that sacred space. The result is a song that breathes and has a provocative and addictive personality of its own.
As Juana Everett explains: “One Million Dollars is proof of certain human forces that women have traditionally learned to hide, to swallow in silence, letting them poison their hearts and minds. This song has allowed me to go deeper into certain dark emotions, and make room for a kind of madness that needed to come out. As the chorus says: ‘Never underestimate the power of a woman, a very mad woman’.’”
This single – as the entire album – has been mastered by wizard Dave McNair (Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, R.E.M., Brandi Carlile, Susan Tedeschi, Beck).
‘One Million Dollars’ will be released with a Western inspired music video that takes place in a wooden cabin somewhere in the American West of the early XX century. Directed by María Salto, this piece reveals Juana Everett as an antihero about to execute her evil plan, expressing in solitude the darkest corners of a mind gone rogue.
