'Among the Evergreens' is revered Americana singer-songwriter Suzie Ungerleider's most personal narrative to date. Emerging under her own name in 2021 after retiring from her long-time moniker, Oh Susanna, Ungerleider continues her thrice JUNO-nominated tradition of exquisite storytelling with a record that reflects both where she has been and where she is now.
Divided into two parts, “Then” and “Now,” the original album traces songs inspired by the past and the present, as Ungerleider reflects on what it means to be in the middle of life, seeking answers to who she was and who she is now. Her beautifully evocative and atmospheric writing draws listeners into a world that is both intimate and universal, touching on themes of teenagehood, the loss of innocence, love and heartbreak, marriage, motherhood, survival, second chances, fights, forgiveness, and grace.
For the deluxe edition, Ungerleider returns to the heart of these songs, stripping them back to let the lyrics truly shine. Recorded in the south of the Netherlands with renowned Dutch guitarist BJ Baartmans, who also provided accompaniment, the new acoustic versions of ‘Juniper’, ‘Real Estate’, ‘College Street’, and ‘Mount Shasta’ reveal fresh emotional depth, while the collection is rounded out by the stunning new single, ‘Amsterdam’.
“At the beginning of my musical journey, I was afraid to show myself, so I took on a persona, and I wrote songs in a fictionalised way,’ she reflects of her lifelong journey towards becoming more comfortable with the vulnerability of revealing herself. “It is this idea of trying to merge the musical person and the human being that I am, and get closer to what is important to me. And it’s interesting, because the more specific I get, the more universal it is.”
