More than half a century after Sandy Denny wrote one of Britain's most cherished songs, 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes' continues to find new listeners – and new meaning
For acclaimed folk-Americana singer-songwriter Sorrel Nation, Sandy’s timeless classic “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” has become a song woven into her own musical story.
Her connection with the song began in 2022 at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention, when she first performed it at The Magic Teapot Music Venue. What started as a single special moment has grown into a defining part of her live performances, with the song accompanying her throughout the past four years of touring.
Sorrel says:
“My story and love of ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ began in 2022 at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention, when I first sang this timeless classic at The Magic Teapot Music Venue. I’ll never forget that moment: standing beside the fire on a 35-degree day, cup of tea in hand, singing to a room full of Sandy Denny fans and seeing the smiles on their faces. It was there that I truly fell in love with the song.
It stayed with me long after that performance and has become a defining part of my career over the past four years. It has travelled with me every evening on tour, continuing to resonate with audiences and revealing new emotions every time I sing it. Some songs never lose their magic, and for me, this is one of them.”
Sorrel releases her heartfelt interpretation of “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” on 21 August 2026. The single is the second release from her forthcoming album ‘Creeping Thyme’, which follows on 23 October 2026.
The release comes at a significant time for Sorrel, following her invitation to contribute to Sandy Denny: A People’s History, compiled by Sandy Denny’s daughter, Georgia Rose Lucas.
The book celebrates Sandy’s life and music through more than 200 personal memories from those who saw her perform, met her or discovered her work, and features contributions from many respected figures in music, including Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, Mary Black, Barbara Dickson, Linda Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Joe Boyd, Joan As Policewoman, Richard Digance and Iain Matthews.
Sorrel’s inclusion among such distinguished contributors reflects the respect she has earned within the folk community and makes her interpretation of “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” a deeply personal celebration of Sandy Denny’s enduring legacy.
The single follows “Ran Jonny Ran”, the first taste of Creeping Thyme, which has already received critical acclaim. Americana UK praised the track as “a captivating example of Sorrel Nation’s fine song craft.”
Building on the success of her acclaimed debut album ‘Lost En Route’, Sorrel continues to establish herself as one of the UK’s most distinctive contemporary folk-Americana voices, combining storytelling, emotional depth and a powerful connection to the roots of the music she loves.
