There’s something about the darkness that makes even the most familiar surroundings feel unsettling. Strange creaks, unexplained bangs and shifting shadows can leave us wondering whether there's more going on than meets the eye.
It’s this intriguing space between rational explanation and the unexplained that inspires ‘Black Cat’, the atmospheric new original from Blackpool duo Darwin and the Finches.
Blending indie folk and Americana, ‘Black Cat’ is a wonderfully haunting composition featuring Celtic-tinged acoustic guitar, hypnotic slide guitar, haunting harmonica and an evocative vocal performance.
With its delicate acoustic textures, powerful dynamics and underlying sense of unease, the track draws the listener into a captivating world where reality and superstition begin to blur.
Formed in 2022, Darwin and the Finches feature Michael Shanagher on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, alongside Liam Pemberton on drums, percussion and backing vocals. Driven by honest songwriting, strong melodies and a genuine connection with audiences, the duo have toured extensively across the UK, supporting acts including Baskery and Sound of the Sirens. Their performances have also taken them to the Henley Festival and sold-out audiences in their hometown of Blackpool.
‘Black Cat’ is an evocative and compelling showcase of the duo’s songwriting and musical identity – a track that leaves you questioning just how much of what we experience in the darkness can truly be explained.
