‘Breathe ‘is the third album by Canadian musician Jade Turner. She’s an artist that has been steadily building up a reputation as a songwriter and musician and, ‘Breathe’ shows that that reputation is well deserved indeed.
Musically, the album oozes smooth laid-back Americana and upbeat Country with a hint of Folk thrown in for good measure.
A brief haunting instrumental, ‘Intro’ opens the album, and it’s an immediate attention grabber that flows into the upbeat ‘That Wind’, a song that’s about change and rising to meet the challenges it often brings. The listener is given the impression that in the ‘Deadweight’ Turner has taken control of her life through the aforementioned challenges that she has faced and has become a stronger person for it.
It is clear from first listen to the album that Turner’s songwriting ability is one that should be taken seriously. All the songs on this album contain accessible yet thought provoking lyrics that show an artist who is clearly in tune with her own feelings, but also with the feelings of her listeners. The depth of some of her lyrics is simply astounding as she weaves tales from the heart into situations that the everyday listener can relate to.
There’s a hint of Country Pop to the melodic upbeat ‘Stay Wild Child’, a radio friendly anthem of individuality if there ever was one. The touching ballad ‘Slow Dance’ features a stunning duet with Sebastian Gaskin and the result is magical. It’s the standout track on the album and if there’s one song to define this collection of music and Turner as an artist then this is it.
Across eleven thought-provoking songs, Turner delivers an engaging album that resonates with authenticity, emotional depth, and unwavering strength.
