From the opening notes of the rousing ‘Whatcha Gonna Do About It’ to the final notes of ‘Hesitation Blues’, ‘Working in Wood’ is a dynamic trip through Americana infused European folk music and beyond. The tight relationship developed between the two musicians is on show as they weave and wind their way between between each others instruments with skilful ease.
Title track, ‘Working In Wood’ harks back to the shipbuilding days of the past as both musicians aided by Jon Short on double bass, take the listener on a nostalgic thoughtful journey to a lifestyle now long gone. Similarly ‘London Road’ takes us on another journey through cobbled streets and beyond.
As with their previous collaborations, ‘Working in Wood’ was recorded live in the studio with the two seasoned musicians weaving their magic around each others instruments and vocal harmonies, finding their anchor in John Short’s bass.
The jaunty country sound of ‘Deep River Blues’ allows Catlow’s violin skills to shine as does the feline inspired instrumental ‘The Ballad of Hendrix The Cat’. The intriguing ‘Tornado Smith’ spins a tale about first Wall of Death rider in the UK, and also features some warm vocal harmonies from the two musicians.
There’s no ego or anything flashy about ‘Working in Wood’, just good honest musicianship from two very talented individuals having a good time.
Highly recommended.
