Sunjay is a prolific singer-songwriter who has opened for renowned artists Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Chris Smither, and Martin Simpson. Recorded over two nights, and featuring a mix of original material alongside some well-chosen covers and previously unrecorded material, this is a release that showcases an artist who is more than at ease in the live situation.
Highlights include an energetic cover of bluesman Tommy Johnson’s ‘Big Road’, the original composition ‘Mean amd Ugly’, and a beautiful cover of the John Martyn classic ‘May You Never’.
The digital-only release is a treat from start to finish and reminds the listener of the fun that one musician armed only with a guitar and a great setlist can give to an appreciative audience.
Other stand out songs include a cover of Chris Smithers’ ‘Love You Like A Man’, and the humorous audience pleasers ‘Bob Dylan’ and ‘Origin Of The Species’. Both show that Sunjay is an artist who has a natural empathy with his audience and knows how to write a sharp lyric around a catchy tune. Steering away from the blues into Americana, ‘Ghost Train’ is another example of Sunjay’s lyrical skill as the song leads the listener on a journey through a long-departed landscape containing figures now consigned to history.
