For three decades, Lance Cowan has worked as a publicist for some of Americana’s finest songwriters, including Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Guy Clark, and Michael Martin Murphey.

Given his background, it should come as no surprise that he delivers an exceptional album with ‘The Air That You Breathe’—remarkably his third release since 2024. This prolific songwriter has once again crafted a record steeped in storytelling, drawing deep inspiration from the contemporary American human condition.

‘The Air That You Breathe’ gently eases the listener into the experience with ‘Love’, a tender track where the central character reflects on life’s journey, the aging process, and love as the ultimate anchor for survival. Cowan excels at exploring the human condition, demonstrating an intimate understanding of it throughout the project. This is evident on the title track, which invites comparisons to the poignant work of Mary Gauthier, as well as on ‘The Road’, a classic blue-collar tale of hardship reminiscent of the stories that defined Bruce Springsteen’s career.

Another standout is ‘William Cooper Smith’, which paints a vivid portrait of an upstanding lawman who tragically succumbs to the crushing pressures of his profession. However, Cowan truly raises the bar with ‘Where’d They Go’, a subtle yet hard-hitting commentary on neighbours suddenly disappearing—a narrative made devastatingly relevant by current government policies and the actions of I.C.E.

Produced by Scott Paschall at the Sound Emporium in Nashville, Tennessee, ‘The Air That You Breathe’ is a warm, earthy collection of songs. Its gentle, Americana-based melodies perfectly breathe life into Cowan’s evocative lyrics, conjuring rich, vivid imagery in the mind of the listener to deliver a contemporary Americana masterpiece with a classic twist.
