‘The Maniacs’ is the result of the combination of some very skilled musicians sharing a passion for making music. Brought together by Paul Hutchinson (accordion), the line-up features Karen Wimhurst (clarinet), Seona Pritchard (violin/viola) and Gill Redmond (cello). The resulting recording meanders its way through ten 18th century dance tunes collected from Hutchinson's recently released book: 'Sixty Country Tunes 1786-1800'.
‘Admiral Mitchel’s Reel’ opens with hints of English of traditional nautical themes as Hutchinson’s accordion rises to the fore before the other musicians join in to augment and enhance the melody. The quirky jig ‘Roodulum’ finds its voice with Wimhurt’s clarinet playfully dancing around the melody, yet firmly anchored by the combination of strings and accordion holding the rhythm together.
‘General Suwarrow’s Strathspey’ is the stand out piece in the collection. Musically it delights as the accordion swirls and strings glide and pluck together in melancholic harmony.
The delightful character filled jigs, ‘Whiskers’ and ‘Barham Downs’ round out the record with a more whimsical style – once again enhanced by each individual instrument synchronised in melodic unison.
The marriage of strings, accordion, and clarinet on this collection yield remarkable results. The traditional roots of the music are respected, while there are classical overtones reminiscent of the Baroque works of Bach and Handel, all combined with the progressive feel of bands such as Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention.
A truly beautiful record.
