'Blue Sky', the debut release from Reverend Shawn Amos and the Brotherhood is an enjoyable bluesy romp. This record gives a fresh feel to a familiar genre.
Early highlights on ‘Blue Sky’ include the heavy blues groove of ‘Troubled Man’, and ‘Counting Down The Days’. The softer side of the blues is explored in the Americana-influenced ‘Stranger Than Today’, and the soulful ‘The Pity And The Pain’. ‘Albion Blues’, meanwhile, showcases Amos’ skilled harmonica playing.
Best known as a blues singer, harmonica player, and producer, in forming The Brotherhood, Amos brought together some of the very best musicians from various backgrounds. Drummer Brady Blade (Buddy and Julie Miller, Dave Matthews, Indigo Girls), bassist Christopher Thomas (Norah Jones, Carly Simon, Macy Gray), and long-time Amos guitarist Chris “Doctor” Roberts form the core lineup. Combined with the excellent production, the resulting raw sound gives the impression of the record being recorded live in one take.
The fun-filled ‘Keep The Faith, Have Some Fun’ closes the record on a high note. Drenched in fat-sounding horns courtesy of The Mudbug Brass Band, it is one of those earworm songs you find yourself repeatedly singing on the way home after a show.
‘Blue Sky’ is a great record that brings joy to the senses. The combination of road-tested seasoned musicians ensures the music is tight, subtle, and never overplayed, resulting in a tightly-packed blues album full of infectious tunes.
