There’s been something positively Canadian in the air at Folk and Tumble over the last few weeks as we’ve discovered new music from the likes of Good Lovelies and Sarah Jane Scouten and now the undeniably talented Colleen Brown.
Based in Edmonton, Brown’s sound echoes with the rhythms and feelings of swelling pop from the sixties and seventies and ‘Direction’ sees Colleen team up with backing band and co-producers such as Joel Plaskett to take this old sound in a brand new err… direction.
The record was pieced together from attic demos, recorded in Edmonton by Brown and the recording process began with producer Raymond Richards before the next batch of songs were taken to Halifax and placed in the producing and guitar playing hands of Joel Plaskett. There are more tender moments on the album too with live vocal and piano performances recorded in Taylor Kernohan’s Drive Shed in Toronto while ‘I Asked In The Night’ is a beautiful solo, late night, recording going right back to those original attic sessions.
While it’s undoubtedly a Canadian album, the themes and broad musical scope make this a global record. Brown turns her hand to much of the instrumentation on ‘Direction’ but it’s the lyricism and stellar vocal delivery that will remain in your head.
