After recently discovering the music of The Good Lovelies, we’ve been taking a delve into record shelves stacked high with glorious Canadian folk. Next on the list is Sarah Jane Scouten. Based in Montreal, she’s been performing for as long as she can remember, starting with singing along to Hank Williams and joining her father in bluegrass and gospel tunes.
Today, Scouten is known for her contemporary twist on old time bluegrass and folk. The themes are often outspoken and edgy, from homelessness and midwifery to the lighter side of Canadiana with a wry wit and tongue-in-cheek humour. Musically, this one’s for fans of anyone from the Carter Family to Lucinda Williams via Old Crow Medicine Show. Hints of honky-tonk and Cajun can be heard in the old time Appalachian groove.
Sarah Jane Scouten’s second album ‘The Cape’ was released in 2014 and features the single ‘Our Small Town’, which you can hear below.
