Johnny Cash Remembered

Ten year's ago the world lost a true music great in Johnny Cash. We look back, pay tribute and remember the man in black.

John R. “Johnny” Cash born in 1932 was a singer, a songwriter, an actor and an author. Above all he was a legend in the field of country, folk, rock’n’roll and Americana and one of the most recognisable figures of the 20th century.

Johnny Cash

One of few people to be inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, he was known for his distinctive bass-baritone vocal delivery and the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band. Nicknamed the ‘Man in Black’ he was known in later years for his sombre demeanour, a much more toned down version of his younger rebellious self who fronted raucous shows in Folsom and San Quentin prisons.

In the last ten years, many artists have come and gone. Few will endure with the legacy of Cash. To mark this tenth anniversary we’ve compiled ten songs taken from the Rick Rubin produced ‘American Recordings’ sessions focussing on death, sorrow and redemption.
