Belfast born songwriter Van Morrison may have cracked a rare smile at the weekend as he was “hugely honoured: after receiving a knighthood from the Queen for his contribution to music over the past fifty years.
Beginning his career on vocals and saxophone with Belfast blues band Them, shows in the likes of The Maritime Hotel were legendary. Van has always remained close to his East Belfast roots, namechecking the likes of Cyprus Avenue and Hyndford Street in song and referring to localities and colloquialisms known best round his old stomping ground.
Aged 69, Morrison is notoriously publicity-shy and made only a short statement after picking up the honour.
Throughout my career I have always preferred to let my music speak for me, and it is a huge honour to now have that body of work recognised in this way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans who have supported me on my musical journey.
On the honours list he appears alongside the likes of Lenny Henry and Kevin Spacey, and you’ll find him there under his birth name of George Ivan Morrison. You’ll also find him celebrating his 70th birthday this year with a spectacular live show on Cyrpus Avenue.
