Laugh At Me – Sonny Bono

Featured in the movie 'Good Vibrations' starring Richard Dormer, 'Laugh At Me' is a rare chance to hear Sonny Bono in action without Cher.

Best known, of course, for his work with wife Cher, Sonny Bono only flirted once with a solo career. The legend goes that this mid 60s one-hit-wonder was penned after Bono’s ‘hippie attire’ saw him excluded from a top nightclub and while the doormen may have joked around it was ultimately the singer and songwriter who had the last laugh.

I’ve only come to know the song in more recent times, having experienced Terri Hooley’s raucous recitals of it in many bars and boozers across Belfast. For many years, they’ve all laughed at Terri but as this track plays in the background of the final scenes of “Good Vibrations – The Movie” you can’t help but feel that Terri’s done a Sonny Bono and the joke may well be on you.
